A practical approach to Risk Appetite and Tolerance
to risk appetite and tolerance may not be flawless, however it is practical,
tangible, understood, and applied.
In the absence of
a definitive risk appetite statement, multiple views will exist.
A definitive risk appetite and tolerance will
help in creating a framework for better decision making, reducing surprises and
facilitating better achievement of objectives, whilst respecting stakeholders
views. Understanding both
appetite and tolerance levels with sufficient granularity will enable improved
management of risks, quality of inputs into resilience processes and
significant progress on the journey to becoming a risk intelligent and
About the Speaker:
Les Carlo’s thirty year career at Eskom has been varied,
beginning in 1983 as Chief Engineer of Eskom’s then Orange Free State Region.
Since 1986 he has held roles such as Engineering Manager, Business Strategy
Manager, and Telecommunications Operations Manager.
In 2005 he was seconded as
the Acting Chief Executive and Executive Director of Telecom Lesotho, an Eskom
subsidiary. On his return to South Africa in 2008, he was promoted to
the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Eskom’s Roshcon and Rotek
subsidiary companies; and as Chief Operating Officer of Eskom Enterprises SOC
Les is currently Eskom Holdings Limited’s General Manager for Risk and
Resilience, and has held this role since October 2011.He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering Technology
(UK) and the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers; and holds a
Doctor of Engineering from Warwick University in the UK.
