What you can expect

As we almost reach the half-way mark for the year, we can fairly say that South Africa has faced some challenging issues. As we look back and reflect on the first six months of the year, we are reminded about the diversity of events making headlines from corruption to droughts, kidnapping to floods and fires, and not forgetting the downgrades all within a short space of time.

The Cruywagen-IRMSA Risk Laboratory aims to assist leaders to focus on risks that are of major concern to their organisations as well as our country. As outlined in The Institute of Risk Management South Africa's 2017 Risk Report, which was released in January 2017, the top 10 risks for the country were:

  • Increasing Corruption
  • Water crises
  • Unemployment or Underemployment
  • Droughts in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Lack of Leadership
  • Fiscal Crisis/ Credit Rating Downgrades
  • Economic Slowdown or Recession
  • Increasing Strike Action
  • Profound Political & Social Instability
  • Governance Failure

The question then becomes, how should South African businesses respond to the above mentioned risks? While we focus on our own risks as a country, we also need to be vigilant about what the global risks are and how they affect us as South Africa. With that said the theme for this year’s Risk Laboratory is “Downgrade your risks and upgrade your opportunities” - this speaks to a solution driven mind-set as we look at the positive opportunities these situations present us with.

The interactive 2017 Risk Laboratory will unpack the findings of the IRMSA 2017 Risk Report as well as the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Risk Report for 2017.

For the first time we have added a second day to the Risk Laboratory and we will be hosting a Masterclass , where we will delve deeper into four key risks that are currently prominent in South Africa and you will hear from professionals on how to manage these risks in your business. The masterclass will be facilitated by the industry specialist; the focus will be on response strategies to the following Risks :

  • Lack of Innovation
  • Current Economic and Socio-Economic Risk
  • Lack of Leadership and Governance failure
  • Risk and Opportunity
