The diagram below shows the relative levels of Fellow, Associate and Ordinary Member grades. There are 2 ways in which individuals can achieve Associateship and Fellowship grades.

Individuals can achieve Associate grade by either of 2 routes available. Route 1 provides for those individuals who are experienced but have not successfully completed a relevant professional or academic qualification, whereas Route 2 provides for those who are appropriately qualified - see below for accreditation criteria. Both routes lead to the same Associate grade. Please note that Fellowship would be available only to individuals who can qualify as Associates. There should be at least one year's gap between applying for membership initially and applying for a re-grade to Fellowship.



1. Ordinary Member

Open to all studying, or working in functional areas related to the Risk Management field, e.g includes surveyors, loss control officers, safety officers, etc.

Prospective Ordinary Members will be required to complete an application form for membership.

 

2. Associate Member

This grade should be recognized worldwide as a sign of a
Risk Management Professional. Both routes detailed below are available to individuals including all Ordinary Members. Prospective Associate Members will be required to complete an application form.

Route 1 (experience)

Awarded to those who can demonstrate

a) 10 years or more experience in a discipline of Risk Management

Route 2 (qualifications & experience)

Achieved by applicants through:

a) successful completion of an IRMSA recognized qualification (e.g. Advanced Diploma in Risk Management, ARM (US), AIRM (UK))

and

Min 3 years experience in a discipline of Risk Management

OR

b) Are qualified by a relevant professional or academic qualification which is not necessarily focused on the Risk Management discipline (see below)

and

Min. 5 years experience in a discipline of Risk Management.

Approved qualifications for the purpose of accreditation of an Associate under Route 2(b) above –

o Bachelor or Masters Degrees

o Fellow of the Insurance Institute of South Africa

o Fellow of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants

o Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa

o Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants

o Chartered Accountant

o Fellow of the Institute of Loss Adjusters

o Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants

o Certified Internal Auditor

o Certified Government Auditing Professional

o Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries

o Fellow of the Chartered institute of Management accountants

o Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers

o Fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineers

o Fellow of the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors

o Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers

o Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers

o Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management (United Kingdom)

Other qualifications will be considered for approval but, in terms of equivalency, it should be noted that 'Fellow' status of a professional body will be required as opposed to 'Associate'.

3. Fellow Member

This grade is the most senior grade of membership and should reflect working experience in a risk management discipline in addition to academic qualification.

Prospective Fellow Members will be required to complete an application form. A points system will be published for Fellow applications as a guideline to enable individuals to determine if they are eligible to apply for Fellow status.

Approval of the application will, however, remain at the discretion of the IRMSA Membership Subcommittee and ratification by the Executive Committee.
