IRMSA AGM Breakfast Presentation:

Changing Risk Management for "The Future We Want"
Dr Gary Kendall, Sustainability and Strategy Specialist, Nedbank

“Business (organisations) simply cannot succeed in a society that has failed.  If that is the case, businesses (organisations) have to be part of the solution, not part of the problem, to be around for the long term.”  ~ Paul Polman, Unilever CEO

Al Gore (the 45th Vice President of the United States from 1993 to 2001) says sustainable investing, which he defines as “improving quality of life without borrowing from the future”, is the “single largest investment opportunity in history”. He adds: “It has the magnitude of the industrial revolution but the speed of the digital revolution.”

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by 193 countries in September 2015, determine the most critical economic, social and environmental priorities to be addressed by 2030, to ensure prosperity for all.  Together, the SDGs describe “The Future We Want”, offering a powerful and compelling reason why risk and opportunity management in our organisations can help shape South African and global outcomes.

Dr Gary Kendall will explore how organisations can use the SDGs to embed a meaningful sense of purpose, and how doing so will drive different behaviours across the organisation, and what it means for how we think about risk and opportunity across the enterprise.  His insights position how a different perspective is required on what is important; how we can create new markets; contribute actively to a flourishing South African society and get onto a new economic development trajectory.  He will argue that what is required is a shift from a risk bias to an opportunity bias – that instead of merely reacting to problems, an opportunity mind-set calls for pioneers that will demonstrate courage, leadership, innovation, inspiration, passion, agility and new ways of working!

We know all too well that we need to restore trust, rebuild our foundations on strong ethics and instil these as cultural norms in society.  This Big Thinking is crucial and will make a substantial difference to us as individuals, organisations and society at large.
