Why Futures Thinking is important for the Risk manager?

Considering the number of risks that have materialised during the recent past and considering how many of those risks had been highlighted since 2015, it has become obvious that knowing about these risks have proven of limited value.

The Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) has been driving various change initiatives such as “Future Fit Risk Managers” and “Lead 2017”.  Therefore the theme for 2018 is “Big Thinkers’ which is reflective of what IRMSA believes the future risk profession should transform to.

The biggest “immediate” challenge for the risk profession is that risk management needs to evolve and adapt faster than the rapidly changing world and risk management professionals need to develop the skills and tools to better navigate organisations and their leadership into the future.

Skills and tools such as anticipatory abilities, the building and understanding of macro-perspectives, characterised by knowledge of cycles, patterns and meta-perspectives.

So here is our first Futures thinking workshop ...

Futures thinking is rooted on the understanding that knowledge of the future is not possible but knowledge of the factors that shape the future are known and the consequences provide a palette of possible future outcomes, states or scenarios.
