A Practical approach to Risk Appetite and Tolerance 


Eskom’s approach to risk appetite and tolerance may not be flawless, however it is practical, tangible, understood, and applied. 
In the absence of a definitive risk appetite statement, multiple views will exist.  
A definitive risk appetite and tolerance will help in creating a framework for better decision making, reducing surprises and facilitating better achievement of objectives, whilst respecting stakeholders views. Understanding both appetite and tolerance levels with sufficient granularity will enable improved management of risks, quality of inputs into resilience processes and significant progress on the journey to becoming a risk intelligent and resilient organisation.


About the Speakers:

Christopher Palm holds a BCom in Accounting, Economics and Management Accounting, BCom (Hons) in Management Accounting and Business Economics; and is working on an MCom in Business Management.  He has spent 22 years at Eskom, with 16 of those in internal audit and forensic investigations, and is currently the Senior Manager: Group Integrated Risk.  Christopher and his team were responsible for establishing the new Eskom Integrated Risk Management Framework which attracted accolades from industry peers, management and IRMSA alike.  


Les Carlo’s thirty year career at Eskom has been varied, beginning in 1983 as Chief Engineer of Eskom’s then Orange Free State Region. Since 1986 he has held roles such as Engineering Manager, Business Strategy Manager, and Telecommunications Operations Manager.
In 2005 he was seconded as the Acting Chief Executive and Executive Director of Telecom Lesotho, an Eskom subsidiary. On his return to South Africa in 2008, he was promoted to the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Eskom’s Roshcon and Rotek subsidiary companies; and as Chief Operating Officer of Eskom Enterprises SOC Ltd.
Les is currently Eskom Holdings Limited’s General Manager for Risk and Resilience, and has held this role since October 2011. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering Technology (UK) and the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers; and holds a Doctor of Engineering from Warwick University in the UK.
Les currently serves on the IRMSA Executive Committee
