How long does it take to obtain the letter?

  • A Critical Skills Letter takes approximately 15-20 working days to process from the date that all supporting documentation and proof of payment has been received and is deemed in order. This time frame is a guideline only and is dependent on the volume of requests received. 
  • The letter will only be issued once payment and all supporting documentation has been received.
  • All supporting documentation needs to be sent in 1 consolidated email. Your request for this letter may be further delayed if documentation is sent in more than 1 email correspondence or if invalid supporting documentation is received.

How much does the letter cost?

  • The cost for this letter is R700.00 ex VAT.
  • Please only make payment once you have a payment reference number as appears on the invoice.
  • The cost of a critical skills letter is non refundable.

What documentation must I submit to receive the letter?

  1. Proof of payment using reference number stated on invoice.
  2. Certified Copy of Passport dated not older than 3 months.
  3. Proof of Employment - a signed letter from your employer stating your position, date employment commenced  and dated not older than 02 months from the date of issue.
  4. Certified SAQA certificate confirming your Highest Qualification/s, dated not older than 3 months.
  5.  Detailed and up to date CV. The CV should include:


  • All previous positions held, with the start and finish dates for these positions listed clearly.
  • Start date of current position.
  • Full detailed list of duties and responsibilities under each of the previous positions and your current position.
  • Include telephone and emails for your references within your CV.

Note: Further supporting information/documentation may be requested if required.



IRMSA assists its members with both critical skills letters and permanent residence letters. Please ensure you clarify which of these you require when emailing us.  The Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) reserve the right to refuse the issuing of a critical skills or permanent residence letter or appeals letter.

An official critical skills letter, reflecting your details and a unique reference number, will be issued directly from IRMSA to the applicant requesting it (provided proof of payment and the correct supporting documentation has been received).

The turnaround time to receive such letter is 15-20 working days. It should also be noted that there are no shortcuts/fast track options available or other way to obtain a valid letter but through IRMSA directly and by following the process and timelines noted herein.  Members are to ensure that they comply with the IRMSA Code of Ethics and understand their liabilities and obligations as an IRMSA member.
