Board Exams

What is the difference between CRM Prac/Prof? 

The Certified Risk Management Practitioner (CRM Prac) is a designation in line with the NQF 6 qualification called Organisational Risk Practitioner whilst the Certified Risk Management Professional (CRM Prof) is also a designation that is in line with the NQF 8 qualification called Organisational Risk Manager. 
 

What is the difference between a Designation and the Qualification? 

The designation is awarded by the professional body and is maintained through completing CPD, paying your membership and adhering to the professional body code of conduct, whereas the qualification is yours for life and cannot be revoked by the professional body. 
 

Who is eligible to write the exam? 

An individual member of IRMSA with the associate level of membership and has the required risk management experience. 
 

How much is the exam? 

  • CRM Prac – Application R795 ex vat and registration R5850 ex vat 
  • CRM Prof – Application R815 ex vat and registration R8170 ex vat
     

Where will the exam take place? 

Online or Johannesburg Sandton offices, as well as some regions. Please contact professionalisation@irmsa.org.za to determine if your region will be accommodated this year. 
 

When will I receive the study material? 

As soon as IRMSA receives full payment with respect to your registration invoice 
 

What is the average pass rate for the exam? 

Around 50% of the candidates pass. Studying timeously and preparing for the exam is crucial. 
 

Are there classes for attending? 

No, we only host a preparation/content workshop six weeks before the exam online.  
 

Do I still need to complete the logbook? 

Yes, the CRM Prac logbook is compulsory however, the CRM Prof route has an option of the logbook or a panel interview 
 

When is the logbook due?

You are given six months from the day you receive your results 

Certified Risk Management Practitioner - BOARD EXAM 1

What do I need to do to write the Board Exam? 

Before you register for the Board Exam, ensure that you meet the membership criteria of Associate Member.  If you meet the criteria and you are not an Associate Member of IRMSA, then you will need to apply for Associate Membership in order to write the Board Exam.   In the meantime, click on the link provided in the Board Exam email or go to the Board Exam page on the IRMSA website and register online for the Board Exam.   Complete all the information properly in order for the IRMSA team to be able to accurately assess your registration or it could be declined. 

 

What happens if I register for the exam in June and I am unable to write? 

You may defer the exam to November. This must be done at least 21 days before the date of the exam.   If you need to defer after the 21-day notice period, you will need a doctor's certificate and your application will be reviewed by the committee.  There is a cost of R735 ex vat to defer the exam. 


Does this mean I have completed the IRMSA qualification? 

No, you have received the designation of Certified Risk Management Practitioner (CRM Prac).   In order to complete the qualification, you will need to register for the qualification (The Organisational Risk Practitioner, developed through the Quality Council for Trade and Occupations (QCTO)) once it is opened to the market either late 2015 or early 2016 
 

Will the exam only be offered in June this year? 

No, the exam will be offered in November again this year.  This cycle will be repeated yearly. 
 

If I complete the exam successfully will I automatically receive the designation Certified Risk Management Practitioner (CRM Prac)? 

No, you will need to complete your work experience log book which needs to be signed off by your supervisor at your workplace.   Once this is signed off and you have passed the exam, then you will receive the designation, which is registered with the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA). 
 

Will the exam be offered only in Johannesburg? 

IRMSA intends to offer the exam in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and online, but it depends on numbers received in each region.   The candidates will be liaised with should the sufficient numbers not be met in the region. 
 

When will the preparation workshops be held? 

To be advised soon. Please confirm directly with IRMSA.  The exam has 100 marks.   70% is multiple choice questions and 30% has opened ended questions.   The exam is taken at an IRMSA venue or Online at a set time.    
 

Are there any workshops before the exam? 

There are two workshops before the exam to assist candidates in preparing for the Board Exam.  One workshop deals with the actual exam and how it is structured and how you should prepare.  The other workshop is a recorded video that handles content and any difficulties that candidates are having with content. 
 

What is the study material? 

The study material is made up of relevant sources that align to the IRMSA qualification (Organisational Risk Practitioner) curriculum.   The sources are made up of relevant standards (such as ISO 31000, King 3, IRMSA Guideline to Risk Management, etc) and other documents that are relevant.   The source material is made available to the Board Exam candidates online, on the IRMSA Your Membership system. 
 

What does the Board exam fee include? 

The Board Exam fee includes the study material, a preparation workshop online video and the exam (as the exam is online). 
 

What are the costs involved in order to write the Board Exam? 

First pay the application fee of R674 ex vat – you will automatically receive an invoice for this once you have completed the online application for the exam. This payment is due once you have made your online application. Applications will not be processed until proof of payment for this has been received.  Should you meet the criteria and are accepted to write the Board Exam, then the fee will be R5850 ex vat. 
 

To become an Associate Member, you must meet one of the following criteria: 

Have no qualification + 10 years risk management experience  Have any non-risk qualification + 5 years risk management experience  A risk qualification + 3 years risk management experience  The IRMSA Occupational qualification + 3 years risk management experience

What do I need to do to write the Board Exam? 

Before you register for the Board Exam, ensure that you meet the membership criteria of Associate Member.  If you meet the criteria and you are not an Associate Member of IRMSA, then you will need to apply for Associate Membership in order to write the Board Exam.   In the meantime, click on the link provided in the Board Exam email or go to the Board Exam page on the IRMSA website and register online for the Board Exam.   Complete all the information properly in order for the IRMSA team to be able to accurately assess your registration or it could be declined. 

 

Board Exam Results and Fees   

Candidates who pass the Board Exam will retain their results and will need to submit their Work Experience Logbook to IRMSA or RSVP for a panel interview, in order to be approved and thereby receive the CRM Prof designation.  Candidates who do not pass the Board Exam will have up to two opportunities to write the Board Exam within a two year period.  Candidates will be informed of their results 2 months after writing the Board Exam.  All fees are to be paid to IRMSA before or on the stipulated due date(s) in order for processing of applications, providing access to the study material and other important Board Exam information.  Should a candidate fail the Board Exam, the candidate is eligible to re-write at the next scheduled Board Exam date.  The candidate will be liable to make a 50% payment of the Board Exam registration fee. 


Special Needs 

Should you have any special needs (e.g. wheelchair access, hearing or sight impairment), please inform IRMSA in writing at least 2 weeks before the date of the examination.

You may defer to the next Board Exam sitting. This must be done at least 21 days before the date of the current exam that you are registered for.   If you need to defer after the 21 day notice period, you will need a doctor's certificate if its medically related and your application will be reviewed by the committee. However, each case will be reviewed on its merit.  There is a fee to defer the exam. 
 

Does this mean I have completed the IRMSA Organisational Risk Practitioner  qualification? 

No, you have received the designation of Certified Risk Management Professional - CRM Prof. (Note points in I above)  In order to complete the qualification, you will need to register for the qualification (the Organisational Risk Practitioner, developed through the Quality Council for Trade and Occupations [QCTO]) once it is opened to the market later in 2017. This qualification will be offered by an accredited service provider. 
 

Will the exam only be offered in October this year? 

Yes, the exam will be offered once a year in October.  
 

If I complete the exam successfully will I automatically receive the designation   “Certified Risk Management Professional” (CRM Prof)? 

No. All successful Board Exam candidates will need to complete the work experience logbook that is signed off by the candidates’ supervisor at their workplace. This completed logbook is to be submitted to IRMSA.  Once the logbook is signed off and approved by the IRMSA Assessor, then the designation, which is registered with the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA), will be awarded to successful candidates.  There is also an option for a panel interview with five panellists for two hours to cover the work experience component. 
 

How is the exam structured? 

No specific pass mark has been set for Board Exam II. The candidate must receive 7 x Competent scores out of a max 10 scores, where 5 assignments are marked by 2 markers each.   The exam is taken online at a set time and date.   The work experience component is covered with a logbook or panel interview once candidates pass the Board Exam. 
 

Is a workshop held before the exam? 

There is a workshop before the exam to assist candidates in preparing for the Board Exam.  The workshop assists candidates with the actual exam format, structure, content and endeavours to assist with any difficulties that candidates may be facing. 
 

What is the study material? 

The study material is made up of relevant sources that align to the IRMSA qualification (Organisational Risk Officer) curriculum.   The sources are made up of relevant case studies, regulatory documents, relevant standard and appropriate documents.   The source material is made available to the Board Exam candidates online, on the IRMSA Your Membership system. 
 

A board exam registration fee: 

Should candidates meet the criteria and are accepted to write the Board Exam, the Registration fee invoice will be emailed to candidates.  Candidates are required to make payment for the Board Exam Registration fee on or before the specified deadline date.  The Board Exam fee includes the study material, preparation workshop(s), the exam and use of the exam equipment (as the exam is online).  All fees are to be paid on or before the stipulated due date(s).  
 

What are the fees involved in order to write the Board Exam? 

A non-refundable application fee:  

All candidates will receive an invoice after they complete the online application for the Board Exam.  This payment is due immediately. The amount due as reflected on the invoice is payable immediately.  Applications will not be processed until proof of payment has been received. 

How does one apply for the Board Exam? 

All applications are to be completed online on the IRMSA website, Professionalisation – IRMSA Board Exam 2.

Have no qualification (Matric) + 15 years risk management experience  Have any non-risk qualification + 10 years risk management experience  Have NQF 8 Risk Qualification + 5 years risk management experience  The IRMSA Occupational (Organisational Risk Practitioner) qualification + 3 years risk management experience
